Happy International Women’s Day 2019!

women have power

Today is International Women’s Day! The older I get, the more I appreciate women. I just don’t have time anymore for entitled, white men who feel the need to be patronising. This year I am starting the day properly: with a breakfast together with a bunch of amazingly successful women. I work in an industry which is still predominantly male (although women are gaining ground) so it is nice for us women to get together and support each other.

I am grateful for this blog and for the sex blogging community I am part of. Over the course of the last few years I have really grown as a feminist, and as a result I have become more confident. I still don’t quite have the confidence of a middle-aged white man, but I’m working my way towards it.

Women are amazing, and if we band together, we can accomplish so much. I have felt so supported by my fellow sex bloggers, and I wish all women would support each other as much. The myth of women as rivals is only there to divide and conquer and keep us in our place. Well, I for one will not be kept in my place. I am proud to be a woman, and I won’t be put down anymore.

I’m just rambling a bit here, because I am tired and I want to make sure I write something in support of women today. So sorry for that. My SEO Readability Score is going to be good on this one; it seems to like silly short sentences.

Anyhow, women are amazing. We are at a disadvantage in the workplace because we have to work twice as much to get half the recognition a man gets. We are expected to be quiet, accommodating and nice. Ugh, I hate being nice. We do the emotional labour for men, both in the workplace and at home. And when we complain, or stand up for ourselves, we are branded “bitches” and “difficult”. And yet we persist.

So here is to all the women out there. I raise my glass to you, you are all amazing. And I want to send a special shout out to all the WOC. You are working twice as hard as us white women, because you are dealing with the double whammy of race and gender. I take my hat off to you and I thank you for the trailblazing you have done that I benefit from. You are fantastic!

Happy International Women’s Day, everyone!

Don’t compare yourself

I’ve been on a bit of a self-imposed break due to personal reasons. While my life is still not nearly as stable as I would like it to be, I am slowly making my way back to writing, as it makes me happy. But being away for a few weeks (months?) has had an impact on my site traffic. And seeing the stats going down when I have worked to hard to get them up in the first place is hard. (more…)

Life’s not all that bad

women have power

The news is full of gloom and doom lately. Here in the UK we are struggling with Brexit; the sheer idiocy of it all and the total lack of leadership from the government. I am not even going to start with the US, we all know the dumpster fire that’s going on there. In all this, it’s very hard to see a silver lining, to feel even a shimmer of joy. I have been stuck in a funk of doom myself for the past few weeks, but today I realised that life’s not all that bad. (more…)

Taking up space in a men’s world

I grew up with the belief that men are superior to women. It wasn’t just my parents who taught me that: at every turn in my life, society made sure I knew damn well that I should shut up and listen to men. Things haven’t changed. Especially at work, it is abundantly clear that men receive preferential treatment. Ideas proposed by me are shut down, but when my male colleague proposes the same idea a day or two later (or sometimes in the same meeting), it’s greeted with praise and enthusiasm. (more…)
