Our last entry for the Summer 100 participants in the blogger spotlight is Jess from A Mess of Reviews. Jess writes personal stories and various reviews (not only for sex toys).
What made you decide to start a sex blog?
I have always been curious about sex. The curiosity has led me to wanting to learn more about how our bodies work, what feels good, and what works for different people. I also enjoy writing so it was a natural fit to create a blog to share what I am learning. I also post reviews of recipes and other products. I just enjoy the sex posts the most!
What, if anything, would you like your blog to achieve?
Like many others, I can’t afford to drop money on products that aren’t going to be utilized. Sharing my opinions can help others make a decision about what to spend their money on. I also hope it will help others feel more comfortable talking about sex and what works for them.
How much do you protect your anonymity as a sex blogger or are you quite open about writing a sex blog? And if the latter, what kind of reactions have you received?
Other than my husband, no one knows about my blog in my everyday life. I choose not to share it with friends and family to avoid the judgement and comments. I don’t have the most sex friendly friends and family so this is my safe space. I can remember sex shaming and body shaming comments from back to when I was a child so am not willing to share. My participation in review programs such as Influenster and BzzAgent is common knowledge among my friends and family, I just leave out the sexy stuff!
If readers would read only one post from your blog, which one would you recommend? (i.e. which is your favourite/most important blog post?)
Right now my favourite post is titled Connecting published last week. My husband and I are very different in the bedroom so it was important for me to share with others how we make it work. I am very proud of the trials and tribulations my marriage has endured and sex has always been a way to reconnect again. It is possible to have partners in any relationship that are very different if open communication and compromise are built in.
Do you have any advice for other sex bloggers?
I am a very new blogger so can only suggest that others follow their heart. Stay true to yourself and keep working towards bettering yourself and your writing. Never stop learning. Based on observing the blogger community for a while I think good advice would also be to own your mistakes and be accountable.
And finally, why have you decided to join Summer 100 Sex Bloggers Challenge and how far have you got with writing 100 posts?
I joined because I thought it would be a great motivator to build content on my blog. Unfortunately, life got crazy and I dropped my challenge plans. I have posted only about 12 pieces since starting the challenge but I had to focus on taking care of me. It isn’t what I planned but so be it!
