I’ve done it again. I started my new erotic novel about a month ago and I have just decided to scrap the whole thing and start over. Over 30,000 words in the bin. It’s painful, but the right thing to do. The reason for this drastic rewrite is that I once again started writing from the wrong angle.
She lay spread out on the bed, the red of her underwear shocking against her white skin. Her eyes were half closed, a ghost of a smile on her lips.
“Are you sure you want this?” he asked, hardly able to believe his luck.
She smiled at him fully now. “Do with me as you please,” she said, her voice husky. (more…)
Writing isn’t going so well these past few days. The move has taken me out of my routine and I find it hard to get back into it. I think I have only written about 1000 words in three days, whereas my goal is 2000 per day. I even missed the deadline for the Mslexia short story competition, which I am really bummed out about as it only comes around once a year and the prize is really good. But I didn’t want to enter a half baked story which I knew wouldn’t win. I did enter the Mslexia flash fiction competition, so that is at least something. I shouldn’t be so hard on myself as I have entered a few competitions already this year. (more…)

I have recently read various scathing condemnations of writers who use pen names. Some commenters called authors who use pen names cowardly, others said they couldn’t trust someone who did not use their own name for a pen name. (more…)
If you follow me on Twitter, you will be aware that I am moving house. (I promise I will stop moaning about it soon.) As part of the house move, I flipped through some old pictures from my student years and damn! I was so young and skinny. My immediate reaction was, ‘I wish I still had that body’. My favourite book of all time is Gone With the Wind. I realise that it has its issues, not the least of which its problematic portrayal of slavery. However, it also gave me my favourite heroine. Ever since I read the book for the first time at the tender age of 16, I have been in love with Scarlett O’Hara. It never once occurred to me that other people might not like her as much as I. Imagine my shock and surprise when my sister said she hated Scarlett. And since that revelation I have heard more people say so. (more…)
